Through targeted investment in the people and infrastructure that underpin the distribution network, we aim to turn a more dependable grid into a foundation for Zambia's long-term economic growth and development.
ZamGridCo is governed by a team bringing together expertise in the African power sector, project management and development finance. We closely collaborate with both the private and public sector to ensure that investments are delivered to a high technical and fiduciary standard. ZamGridCo was established on the heel of a landmark debt buyback concluded in June 2026. Zambia's electricity system has long depended on a single source: water. However, in recent years, that dependence has been continuously tested as a prolonged drought drove water levels at the country's largest hydropower source to historic lows, triggering some of the most severe and sustained power shortages in Zambia's history. ZamGridCo was established in response to that challenge. Working in coordination with its programme partners, it exists to finance the investments that will modernise, strengthen and future-proof Zambia's electricity distribution grid.
Extension of low- and medium-voltage networks, the installation of additional distribution transformers and the provision of service connections to customers aimed at supporting demand growth in urban and peri-urban areas.
Upgrade of overloaded low- and medium-voltage feeders, reinforcement of substations and feeder bays, and installation of voltage regulators and capacitor banks to address voltage drops, congestion and power quality issues.
Extension of smart metering for large and medium customers, communication systems for data transfer, SCADA and advanced distribution management functions, and remote control of key switching points.
Systematic replacement of ageing and obsolete equipment such as 11 kV switchgear, feeders, circuit breakers and associated protection and control gear.
Cross-cutting activities, such as technical training for planners, operations staff and technicians; development and use of planning models and data systems; and support for project management, procurement and contract administration.
